FOURTH PRECINCT
P.O. JAMES MARIN
FIRST PRECINCT

On September 26th 2005 P.O. Timothy McHugh, a field training officer in the Fourth Precinct, along with P.O. Recruit James Marin responded as back-up for units assigned to a female screaming in Inwood. While en route additional information was broadcast of a possible stabbing. The first units on scene located a female with numerous lacerations. They broadcast a physical description and name of subject advising he was armed with a knife and was holding the female victims infant child.
Officers McHugh and Marin while canvassing the area observed what appeared to be a figure crouching in the rear of a commercial building. As the officers approached they saw a male cradling an infant in his arms. Both the subject and the baby were covered in blood. The officers fearing for the child’s safety began a calm dialogue with the subject. After several minutes the subject calmed down and allowed the officers to take the child. The subject was taken into custody as the mother and her infant son were transported to the hospital.
Police Officers Timothy McHugh and James Marin confronted a man who had just stabbed his girlfriend seven times while she held their infant son. Both officers utilized excellent skills and tactics while approaching this armed man and by doing so gained his confidence and removed the baby from harms way without further incident.
