SEPTEMBER 2008
P.O. EDWARD HARTMANN
SIXTH PRECINCT
As a rule the Top Cop of the Month Committee honors Officers for going above and beyond while on duty. Tonight we are honoring Officer Edward Hartmann for a selfless act of kindness that far exceeds any expectations of another human being.
During the spring of 2008 Officer Hartmann discovered that Donna Price the mother of Third Pct. P.O. Tom Price was in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Officer Hartmann decided to get tested and found out that he was a perfect match for Donna. Ed spoke to his family regarding the dangers of surgery, the fact that he would only have one kidney and how his life would be affected. It did not take long for Ed to decide to move forward with the surgery that would save a stranger’s life.
On June 19, 2008 Ed and Donna had the surgery. After a short recovery stay Ed was released from the hospital. While recovering at home Ed received a phone call from Donna expressing her gratitude. She went on to explain how much better she felt after receiving her new kidney.
Donna Price and her family no longer consider Ed, his wife Kathy, and son Brian strangers; they will forever be close members of her family. Donna has said that Ed has given her a gift of life and for that she will be forever grateful.
Ed you leave me at a loss for words. There are very few people that would do what you have done. You along with your family deserve the best that life has to offer. On behalf of the Price Family and your extended Nassau County Police Family…….THANK YOU!
