On September 6th 2006 at 0215 hours three armed subjects wearing ski masks broke into a home on Jerusalem Ave. in Levittown. As the two occupants of the home came downstairs to check on the noises they heard, one of the subjects produced a handgun and ordered them to the floor. The male occupant started to struggle with the armed subject when one of the other subjects struck him on the head with a crowbar. The subjects ransacked the house and fled with about $800 in cash.
Police Officers Donald Costleigh and Brian McCarthy were on special patrol that evening in unmarked RMP 838. Prior to any radio assignments or notifications being broadcast, the officers observed a dark colored vehicle run a stop sign on Hamlet Road. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle which was refusing to pull over. Suddenly the vehicle stopped and three male subjects bailed out. As they chased them the through the rear yards, Officers McCarthy and Costleigh observed that all three subjects were armed with handguns One of the subjects threw his handgun to the ground. The foot pursuit continued with Officer Costleigh apprehending one of the subjects on Mallard Road. The vehicle was secured and Officer McCarthy recovered $775 in cash and the discarded handgun..
Police Officers Donald Costleigh and Brian McCarthy’s keen observation coupled with quick and decisive actions resulted in the arrest of a subject for Robbery 1st degree, Burglary 1st degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in connection with this home invasion. Eighth Squad Detectives and The Suffolk County Police Department are continuing the investigation concerning the three subjects and several similar home invasions.
