OCTOBER 2008
PO JOHN GIOVANIELLO
PO RYAN HADEN
PO MICHAEL SCHWANER
FOURTH PRECINCT
On October 24, 2008 Police Officers John Giovaniello, Ryan Hayden, and Michael Schwaner were working a night tour assigned to the Fourth Precinct. At 1946 the officers received an assignment for a person not breathing at a local Oceanside restaurant.
When the officers arrived on scene they were confronted with a 76 year old female in full cardiac arrest. The woman was unresponsive, not breathing, and was absent of all vital signs. The officers, working together as a team, quickly initiated life saving measures beginning rescue breathing with a bag valve mask and applying the AED. Their attempts were unsuccessful in restoring the victim’s heartbeat or pulse. The officers along with the responding AMT performed CPR but were unable to restore her vital signs. While en route to the hospital the officers and the AMT continued CPR. Shortly after their arrival at the hospital the woman’s vital signs were reestablished and she was admitted to the intensive care unit where she recovered from her heart attack.
If it were not for the actions of these police officers this woman would not have been brought back to life. Police Officers John Giovaniello, Ryan Hayden, and Michael Schwarner are a tribute to the Nassau County Police Department. The Nassau County PBA along with the residents of the Fourth Precinct wants to thank you for your actions on October 24, 2008.
