Top Cop October 2006

On October 4th 2006, Police Officer Thomas Costello was working a night tour assigned to RMP 104. At 2215 hours Officer Costello was responding to a violent family disturbance in Merrick. While en route to the assignment Officer Costello was involved in a serious auto accident. A drunk driver collided with RMP 104 forcing the police car into a tree knocking Officer Costello unconscious.

Police Officers Sam Ferrandino and Daniel Ciaccio traveling directly behind RMP 104 witnessed the accident. The officers notified headquarters and requested assistance. Officer Ferrandino unable to enter RMP 104 on the drivers side due to the extensive damage made his way to the passenger side and rendered medical assistance to Officer Costello who was still unconscious. Officer Ciaccio rendered aid to the driver of the other vehicle and determined she was stable. He immediately ran back to RMP 104.

At this time Police Officers Joe Angelino, Michael Morgan and Michael Leone arrived on scene. The Officers realizing that RMP 104 was on fire raced to assist Officer Ferrandino. As Officer Ferrandino stabilized Officer Costello’s head, Officers Angelino and Morgan ripped out the rear seat while Officers Leone and Ciaccio attempted to put out the fire. Realizing that the fire was spreading and keeping Officer Costello’s injuries in mind, the Officers decided to extract him through the rear of the car. Officers Ferrandino and Morgan passed Officer Costello to the other Officers who placed him on a board and removed him to safety.

Police Officers Sam Ferrandino, Daniel Ciaccio, Joseph Angelino, Michael Morgan and Michael Leone disregarding their own safety, saved the life of fellow Police Officer Thomas Costello. They demonstrated the dedication and loyalty that exists between the members of the Nassau County Police Department. They make all of us proud to wear a blue uniform.
