On November 1, 2003 P.O. Michael Maloney and P.O. Joseph Brady were working a night tour assigned to the Fourth Precinct. At approximately 2230 hours they were meeting with Sgt. Joseph Payette at the Inwood train station to discuss conditions on their posts.
All of a sudden, the three officers heard several gunshots followed shortly thereafter by several more gunshots in the vicinity of the Redfern Housing Projects in Far Rockaway Queens. Sgt. Payette notified CB and requested NYCPD respond as the officers went to investigate. Upon their arrival at Hassock St. just off of Redfern Ave. the officers again heard gunfire and observed several people and numerous autos on that block. Their attention was drawn to a male armed with a handgun standing over another male who was lying in the roadway. The armed male observed the RMP and fled on foot toward the housing projects. Police Officers Maloney and Brady went into foot pursuit of the armed subject.
Sgt. Payette immediately went to the aid of the shooting victim. He secured witnesses and requested assistance from both the NCPD and NYCPD including medical aid for the victim who sustained two gun shot wounds.
Police Officers Maloney and Brady apprehended the subject and recovered the weapon, which was tossed during the foot pursuit. A successful show up was conducted and the subject was placed under arrest. The actions of SGT. Joseph Payette, Police Officer Michael Maloney, and Police Officer Joseph Brady saved a mans life and took a violent felon off the streets. Their alert-ness, dedication and courage are a tribute to the NCPD. It is my privilege to honor the three of you as our Top Cops of the Month for November 2003.
