EIGHTH PRECINCT
On May 18th 2008 P.O. Kenneth Baribault was working a night tour assigned to RMP 206. At 0548 hours Officer Baribault initiated a car stop for a possible DWI on the eastbound side of the Long Island Expressway. As Officer Baribault sat in RMP 206 conducting his investigation a silver Mercedes Benz, being operated by a drunk driver, drifted out of his lane onto the shoulder and struck RMP 206 at 75 MPH. The force of the crash lifted the RMP 6 feet off the ground and smashed it into the SUV that Officer Baribault had pulled over.
Off duty New York Fire Department Firefighter Phillip Scarfi witnessed the accident and ran across eight lanes of traffic to come to Officer Baribault’s aid. Firefighter Scarfi picked up Officer Baribault's radio and requested assistance.
Second Precinct Officers William Erdmann and Demetrios Caroussos along with Eighth Precinct Officers Michael Corso and David Robinson heard the calls for help and responded forthwith to the scene. The four Officers along with Firefighter Scarfi and Nassau County AMT’ s Patricia Modica and Diomedes Diaz provided medical aid to Officer Baribault clearing his airway and ultimately saving his life.
Police Officer Kenneth Baribault was performing his job, he was making a difference taking drunks off the street, making the roadways safe for all of us. Ironically he was struck by a drunk driver and was severely injured. He continues to make progress everyday during his recovery. Officer Baribault and his family remain in our thoughts and prayers.
Police Officers Erdmann, Caroussos, Corso and Robinson along with Firefighter Scarfi and AMT’s Modica and Diaz saved Police Officer Baribault’s life. The Nassau County PBA and its members will be forever grateful for their actions on May 18th 2008. The PBA would also like to recognize the Second Precinct PBA reps for everything theyhave done during the following months assisting Ken and his family. Trustee Ken Cortes, Delegates Michael Schmitt, Frank Russo, Paul Catanzaro, and Danny Cebollero.
