PO VITO VITALE
PO ROBERT GIBBONS
FIRST PRECINCT
On May 23, 2006 Police Officer Vito Vitale and Robert Gibbons were assigned to unmarked RMP 137 to deter gang activity in the First Precinct. While driving on East Pennywood Ave in Roosevelt the officers observed a vehicle stopped in the middle of the roadway obstructing traffic. The driver of the vehicle saw the officers approaching and he sped off at a high rate of speed. The officers pursued the vehicle, pulling it over and conducting a VTL stop.
While talking to the driver the officers detected the odor of marijuana. They also observed several zip- lock bags containing marijuana residue. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the driver had an open Family Court warrant. The driver was placed under arrest. While searching the vehicle prior to impound the Officers continued to notice a strong odor of marijuana. The vehicle was taken to the First Precinct station house, where Officers requested the assistance of a K-9 unit. The K-9 dog went to several areas of the vehicle which led to the recovery of large amounts of marijuana, some of which was hidden in the driver’s side headrest. Hidden in the passenger’s side headrest was a loaded, defaced, Highpoint 9mm Luger which was all within the driver’s reach.
Police Officers Vito Vitale and Robert Gibbons do an excellent job. They work in special patrols targeting gang and drug related activity. Both of these Officers have a direct impact on the communities in which they serve.
