JANUARY 2009
P.O. MICHAEL IANNARELLI
P.O.RONALD SCHMITT
EMERGENCY SERVICE UNIT
On January 14, 2009 Police Officers Michael Iannarelli and Ronald Schmitt were working a 0700x1900 tour of duty assigned to ESU Truck #2423. The Officers were monitoring the patrol radio frequencies and heard a radio call broadcast in the First Precinct for a burglary in progress. The ESU officers were responding to assist the First Precinct Officers in Roosevelt.
While en route the Officers observed two males fitting the description broadcast in the notification. The subjects entered a green Nissan Maxima and drove off. The Officers pulled the vehicle over on Eddy Road and as they approached the car the driver pulled away at a high rate of speed. The Officers returned to their truck and followed the vehicle to Astor Place where the car pulled over and the driver fled on foot. The Officers broadcast a notification and apprehended the two passengers in the car. The driver of the vehicle was located and placed under arrest by First Precinct Officers.
Upon further investigation it was determined that the subject’s vehicle was stolen from the Third Precinct. One of the subjects under arrest was also wanted for a robbery that was committed in Baldwin closing an open First Squad case.
The Emergency Service Unit’s monitoring of the patrol frequencies is a much needed and extremely appreciated aspect of their job. Officers like Michael Iannarelli and Ronald Schmitt are always out there ready to help using the valuable skills and equipment that they have available to them. For a Patrol Cop it’s nice to know that someone is always looking out for you and has your back.
