P.O. JOEL PACHECO
P.O. CHARLES VOLPE

On January 27th 2005 Police Officers Richard Piscitelli, Terrence Mitchell, Joel Pacheco, and Charles Volpe were assigned to the Sixth Precinct. During their tour they received an assignment for a fire at an apartment building on Welwyn Road in Great Neck. Upon their arrival they discovered the building was full of smoke. Tenants told the officers that people were still in the building. The officers entered the building’s first floor and discovered apartment 1C fully engulfed in flames and thick smoke. P.O. Piscitelli closed the door to the apartment to contain the fire. The officers then went from floor to floor banging on the apartment doors to notify all of the tenants of the fire. On the second floor directly over the burning apartment, the officers discovered a 101 year old man with his health aid. The two tenants were at the window with wet towels over their heads. The apartment was full of hot smoke. The officers carried the elderly man out of the building and guided all of the tenants to safety. The officers were treated for injuries and smoke inhalation at North Shore Hospital.
Police Officers Richard Piscitelli, Terrence Mitchell, Joel Pacheco, and Charles Volpe are to be commended for their brave acts in evacuating tenants from a burning smoked filled apartment building.
