P.O. STEVEN FIRESTONE

On February 7, 2005 Police Officers John Trutt, James Lorenzen and Steven Firestone were assigned to the Fourth Precinct POP Unit working a plainclothes detail in the Oceanside area.At 1832 hours a radio call was broadcast for a male selling narcotics from a black SUV in the rear of the Woods Ave Deli. Being in the area the officers respond and plan there approach.
Police Officers Trutt and Lorenzen exit RMP 438 and proceed on foot down the driveway from Woods Ave.P.O. Firestone drives around the corner and enters the parking lot off Cleveland Ave. Police Officers Trutt and Lorenzen observes a black SUV with an open window. It appears to be unoccupied. P.O. Lorenzen approaches the vehicle while P.O. Firestone positions RMP 438. P.O. Trutt at this point observes a male appear in the vehicle from a reclined position. P.O. Lorenzen with his shield displayed identifies himself as a police officer when all of a sudden P.O.. Trutt draws his weapon, screaming that there is a gun. He distracts the subject long enough for P.O. Lorenzen to reach cover behind RMP 438. P.O. Trutt without cover repeatedly orders the subject to drop the gun. The subject pointing the gun at P.O. Trutt refuses. P.O. Trutt fires striking the subject enabling P.O. Lorenzen and Firestone to safely take the subject into custody.
Police Officers John Trutt, James Lorenzen, and Steven Firestone were involved in a life threatening situation. In a split second these three officers knew exactly what to do to protect each other from harm. Their skill and courage is a tribute to the Nassau County Police Department.
