P.O. DANIEL MILLER P.O. JIM BROWN P.O. CHARLES COLE P.O. CLARENCE HUDSON EMERGENCY SERVICES UNIT
On February 10, 2004 at 1350 hours a construction crew was installing new water lines on Coolidge Avenue in Roslyn Heights. A worker was suddenly trapped in a 7-foot deep excavation ditch when the frozen earth caved in around him. Two large boulders had pinned the man at the bottom of the trench.
Sixth Precinct officers and the fire department were dis-patched to the scene, ESU truck 2421 with Police Officer Daniel Miller and Police Officer Jim Brown along with ESU truck 2422 with Police Officer Charles Cole and Police Officer Clarence Hudson started to respond to the scene.
The ESU officers arrived on scene and immediately rec-ognized that the trench walls were in danger of further col-lapse. Disregarding their own safety they entered into the trench and began to dig the victim out of the frozen dirt. The victim lost consciousness and precious time was slip-ping away. The officers strategically deployed several air bags around the boulders and were able to slide the victim out, place him in a basket, and safely remove him to the hospital.
Police Officers Daniel Miller, Jim Brown, Charles Cole, and Clarence Hudson with disregard for their own safety, put their lives at risk to rescue a man who was trapped and bleeding internally from a crushed pelvis. Due to their rapid assessment and skillful use of their equipment this man is alive today. It is my honor to award the four of you as our Top Cops for the month of February 2004.
