TOP COP OF THE MONTH
DECEMBER 2006

P.O. JIMMY BROWN
EMERGENCY SERVICES UNIT
Top Cop December 2006

During the early morning hours of December 11, 2006 Police Officer Jimmy Brown was operating Department Tow Truck 2452. At approximately 0310 hours he was assigned to assist a Highway Patrol Officer who had broken down on the Long Island Expressway. P.O. Brown was traveling north on the Meadowbrook Parkway when he noticed flames off in the distance. As he crossed over Jerusalem Ave. He realized that an automobile was in the middle of the south bound roadway and the entire front end was engulfed in flames.

P.O. Brown stopped in the northbound lanes, immediately crossed the divider and approached the burning vehicle. He was informed by onlookers that the driver and possible passengers were still inside the vehicle. P.O. Brown could not see anything due to the heavy smoke and flames that were shooting out of the dashboard. He opened the drivers door and began to reach around the interior compartment. He felt someone who was unconscious and upside down in the passenger side with his head wedged under the dashboard. At this time the vehicle was completely filled with smoke and the flames were rapidly spreading. P.O. Brown entered the vehicle grabbed hold of the victim and pulled him to safety, at that same time he was able to check that there were no other occupants in the rear of the vehicle. As the tires burst P.O. Brown feared the fully engulfed vehicle could explode at any time. He grabbed the victim underneath the shoulders and dragged him a safe distance away and gave him medical aid.

Police Officer Jimmy Brown in his effort to rescue this victim was exposed to an excessive amount of heat and smoke. Once the victim was safely on his way to the hospital, P.O. Brown began to suffer from symptoms of smoke inhalation. He was transported to a local hospital where he was admitted. Police Officer Jimmy Brown displayed a tremendous amount of courage that evening risking his own life to clearly save the life of that motorist on the Meadowbrook Parkway.
