SIXTH PRECINCT

On December 11, 2005 at 1940 hours a radio assignment for a burglary in progress was broadcast in Great Neck. Sixth Precinct Police Officers Joseph Franolich and Brian Bresocnik were the first to arrive on the scene. As the Officers approached from opposite sides of the house they observed two males fleeing from the front. They broadcast a notification. Police Officer Terry Mitchell was the next officer to arrive on scene. As he approached the front door, he could hear muffled noises coming from inside the house. At this time the officers observed a male trying to exit the house from the second floor balcony. He was ordered to stop at which point he reentered the house. Officer Mitchell kicked in the front door and entered the house finding the homeowners handcuffed and bleeding on the floor. The victims indicated that a subject was upstairs. Officer Mitchell ran up the stairs and confronted the subject who was armed with a loaded Tech 9 machine gun. Officer Mitchell with his gun drawn, ordered the subject to stop and drop the gun. The subject complied and was taken down and handcuffed by Officer Mitchell.
Police Officers Kevin Mullick and Robert Tansi were the next officers to arrive at the scene. Officer Mullick ran upstairs to assist Officer Mitchell while Officer Tansi attended to the injured victims and secured the front doorway. Officer Mullick remained with the subject while Officer Mitchell searched for additional subjects.
Police Officer Peter Larocco was at the scene and searching the area for other subjects. Officer Larocco observed a male fitting the description of the subjects seen fleeing the house. Officer Larocco confronted the subject alone, ordering him to the ground. He was positively identified as one of the subjects.
A subsequent investigation revealed that the subjects had forced their way into the house, handcuffing, beating, and pistol whipping the homeowners. The home invaders were looking for cash and jewelry from the victim’s jewelry business. The subjects were wanted for a murder in New York City and the recovered Tech 9 machine gun was possibly used in that homicide. An investigation by Nassau detectives resulted in the arrest of two additional subjects.
Sixth Precinct Police Officers Terry Mitchell, Joseph Franolich, Brian Bresocnik, Kevin Mullick, Robert Tansi, and Peter Larocco performed an outstanding job. Disregarding their own safety the officers protected the victims from further harm and captured the subjects responsible. Their knowledge of each other and their surroundings, coupled with an understanding of the Sixth Precinct and an excellent response time provided the teamwork needed to bring this incident to a safe conclusion.
