Top Cop August 2004

On August 8th 2004 at approximately 0530 hrs the operator of a Chevrolet Blazer fell asleep and lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle went off the roadway, through a fence and struck several trees. The vehicle came to rest with both doors wedged between two trees and ignited into flames.
At this time P.O. Markus Boykin was driving home from a 1900 x 0500 tour in the Fourth Precinct. He was traveling northbound On Horseblock Rd in Suffolk County when he observed the SW with smoke and flames billowing from the engine compartment. P.O. Boykin realizing that a person was trapped in the auto scaled a six-foot fence and entered the rear hatch of the SW. He attempted to pull the driver out but his legs were pinned under the dashboard. At this point the drivers legs were surrounded by fire. P.O. Boykin exited the SW and went to the driver’s window and reached in pulling on the driver’s legs. The flames were burning P.O. Boykin’s arms. He was finally able to free the drivers legs and pulled him out through the rear hatch with the assistance of two civilians. They quickly carried off the victim to a safe area away from the SW, which was now fully engulfed in flames.
The driver was transported to Stony brook Hospital suffering from broken bones and 2nd and 3rd degree burns.
P.O. Boykin was also transported to Stony Brook Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and abrasions to both arms. The driver of the SW and the civilians involved stated that if it were not for the courage and determination of P.O. Marcus Boykin the driver would surely have died in the fire. It is my privilege to honor you as our Top Cop Of The Month for August 2004.
