Mangano: “Hero” Cops Saved Atlantic Beach Resident’s Life

Two Nassau County police officers were recognized as “heroes” by Nassau’s top-elected official following their transport of an Atlantic Beach woman to a Bronx hospital for a life-saving organ transplant during Friday’s brutal snowstorm.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano congratulated the two officers Friday for their efforts in transporting the woman to Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx for a liver transplant, calling the duo “true heroes” for their intrepid response.

“Without the actions of these officers, this woman would not have made it in time and probably would have lost her chance for a life-saving transplant,” said Mangano. “They are true heroes.”

The woman had been on a waiting list for a liver transplant, according to the county executive’s office. At approximately 9:15 a.m. Friday, police were called to assist her in getting to the hospital when a liver became available.

Nassau Police Officer Robert Prince transported the woman in a department-issued four-wheel drive vehicle, followed by Officer Jacek Trybala. En route to Montefiore, an escort was provided by members of the New York City Police Department. The liver transplant recipient arrived on time and underwent the surgery.

“I could not be prouder of the men and women of the Nassau County Police Department,” added Mangano. “Despite a brutal snowstorm and treacherous driving conditions, these officers were determined to get this Nassau resident to the Bronx and her date with destiny. I am happy to say they succeeded.”
