Nassau Officers win the 2009 PCNY Medal of Valor

Nassau County Police Officers Tim Siar and Tom Mulligan are this year's recipients of the PCNY Medal of Valor. Founded in 1925, the Police Conference of New York honors officers from New York State who have distinguished themselves in the line of duty. In ceremonies held in Saratoga Springs New York, Officers Siar and Mulligan were honored for an incident that occurred in Elmont in March of 2008.

At 0600 hours while working in Nassau’s fifth precinct and operating RMP 501, Officers Siar and Mulligan received a call for a male assaulting a female with a bat. When the officers arrived, they observed several people in front of the bakery and the front window broken.

Officers Siar and Mulligan tactically entered the bakery and observed blood and broken glass on the floor. They then observed a subject behind a counter holding a large kitchen knife. The officers gave verbal commands for the subject to drop the knife. The subject refused and moved towards the rear of the store. The subject again refused all police commands raised the knife in an overhead position and began to quickly advance on Officer Siar. Officer Siar, fearing for his life, moved back and distanced himself from the attacker. He then fired four rounds at the subject, striking him twice and ending the attack.
Police Officers Siar and Mulligan, in the face of grave danger, relied on their training and survival instincts and made it through a life threatening experience.
