Patrolman Kavanagh, was operating a department radio car assisting Fifth Precinct cars in a pursuit of an automobile on the Southern State Parkway. He had stopped his auto an the Parkway east of Newbridge Road, North Bellmore, and exited patrol car to divert traffic when he was struck by auto originally pursued. Officer Kavanagh died in the hospital. Patrolman Kavanagh was presented the Medal of Valor and Purple Heart posthumously on November 3, 1977.
