Police Officer Kempen, while operating Radio Motor Patrol car # 101 was in pursuit of a suspect in a stolen automobile on Meadowbrook Road 200 feet north of Jerusalem Avenue, North Merrick. One of the assisting officer's weapon accidently discharged striking Officer Kempen in the chest, causing his death.
