Cap Leads N.Y. Cops To Suspect
AMW Coverage
Nassau County New York police looked at the New York Yankees cap on the ground.
“That will solve our case,” Lt. Mike Fleming said to a crime scene tech. He was right – but he had no idea at that moment who his bad guy was, and he had no idea he’d be teaming up with Sandy Rao from the U.S. Marshals service to track him.
In June 2009, Lt. Fleming and his crack burglary and detective squad, fronted by Detective Jason Gaertner, had a good idea what happened at the scene. The two victims were an immigrant couple who own a jewelry store on Liberty Avenue in Queens. The couple closed the shop, went to dinner and returned home to Nassau County later that night. Just as they got out of their car and walked up the path to their house, two attackers jumped out of the bushes. One man was holding a gun and demanded money. The male victim put up a fight and was punched and kicked to the ground by the two assailants. The victim bit the gun-wielding assailant and was able to knock his Yankees cap to the ground. The wife struggled to get to the door, unlock it and set off the burglar alarm.
The assailants heard the alarm and fled, but not before taking a $9,000 bracelet and leaving the male victim badly bruised and beaten.
After several months, Nassau cops got a hit back on the Yankees cap. Authorities say the assailant’s DNA reveals one Sadiq Wahhab, birth name Clarence Carter, of Flatbush, Brooklyn. Lt. Fleming and Detective Gaertner dug in and soon discovered that Wahhab has 30 names and aliases and a record going back 30 years.
In January 2010, Nassau police got a break when Wahhab was arrested on drug charges in Brooklyn and a new mug shot was taken. Police took the new picture to the victims, and they say a positive identification was made -- Wahhab was their alleged assailant.
Wahhab Training New Generation Of Thugs, Cops Say
Nassau County cops then staked out the Brooklyn courthouses where Wahhab was supposed to appear on the drug charge and the building where he was scheduled to appear on the federal parole violation charge. No luck.
They visited Wahhab’s last known address in Flatbush: his parents’ house. They quickly discovered that two days prior to their visit, Wahhab allegedly tried to pull off another burglary – this time, just across the street from his parents’ house. NYPD cops pulled DNA from a struggle at that house, and bingo: They got another hit. Wahhab was now wanted for at least two armed robberies.
Finally, in June 2010, an alert officer in the Chinatown area of New York City pulled over a suspicious van. The cop questioned the three or four males in the vehicle, taking their IDs to check them on her computer – but it wasn’t working.
Later, she discovered one of the males was Sadiq Wahhab, and he was traveling with three young men. Police believe Wahhab is continuing to victimize, harass and terrorize the New York area while training a new generation of thugs to follow in his footsteps.
