Nassau warns holiday motorists: Don't drink and drive

Nassau County officials warned motorists Friday not to drink and drive this holiday weekend.

"We want to sure that everyone understands that you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, that this is a crime ... " Legis. David Mejias (D-Farmingdale) said as he stood next to police Chief of Patrol Robert Turk.

"This is one of the busiest driving weekends of the year, and with the economy the way it is and people not necessarily going away on vacation, more people are staying close to home," Mejias said.

Turk said Nassau County makes about 3,000 arrests for DWI every year, and the numbers don't change, "in spite of all of the publicity, in spite of all of the work ...

"I just don't want you think that his is the only time we go out and do this," Turk said at a news conference with Mejias outside police headquarters in Mineola.

"We do this seven days a week, daytime and nighttime, the officers are out there," Turk said. "Obviously, we have more on weekends because people are off at those times."
