Nassau to Hold Gun Buy-back Event

Nassau County is holding its 5th anonymous gun guy-back program on Saturday.

Gun owners who bring in illegal handguns will receive $200 cash. No personal information is required, no forms need to be signed and no video or audio footage will be recorded, Nassau officials said. The program is run by volunteers and church personnel.

“Stopping gun violence in our communities is one of my top priorities, and getting guns off the street is a large component of that,” Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said in a statement.

The event will be held at Rockville Centre’s Shiloh Baptist Church, 96 North Centre Ave., on Jan. 30 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Not accepted are: licensed guns, BB Guns, air pistols, long guns and replicas. Guns transported by car must be transported in the trunk of the car and must be unloaded and put in a plastic/paper bag or in a shoe box.

Forfeiture funds from the Nassau County Police Department and District Attorney’s Office are utilized to fund the program.

Since December 2008, more than 1,300 weapons have been collected.
