Nassau Police Department opens doors to public, schools
The Nassau Police Department headquarters in Mineola will host an open house this week, allowing residents -- and school field trip groups -- to see its mobile command bus, Bureau of Special Operations tactical response vehicle and a variety of weapons.
The department event takes place Monday-Friday, from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. School trips are welcome and no reservations are required.
The police crime scene search section, the highway patrol, aviation and ambulance units, and the marine bureau will participate.
Also, visitors may tour the Police Museum, KID-PIX Photo Identification Program, Children's Safety Town, and may participate in a "radar" ball toss for children.
Field trip buses should drop students off at the 14th Street entrance of Police Headquarters. The department is at 1490 Franklin Ave. in Mineola.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey said in a statement that the Annual Open House Week "is designed to educate, inform, and involve citizens of Nassau County to create a spirit of cooperation among police officers and the citizens they serve."
Open House attractions also will include visits to the 911 Communications Center and the Detention Cell area of Records Bureau.
There will be demonstrations by the Arson/Bomb Squad and the Emergency Services Unit.
Bureau of Special Operations officers will demonstrate how they rappel from a building and there will demonstrations by the department's Canine and Mounted Units.
