Bill seeks to screen people working with kids
Some Long Island parents have thrown their support behind a proposal that would require background checks for all jobs and volunteer opportunities that deal with children.
Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) says there is currently a loophole in the law, which does not require all agencies to check if applicants are registered sex offenders. Though schools, day cares and Little League are covered by the law, many professions are not.
In February, Skelos introduced a bill that would require checks and penalize employers who don't run them.
Some parents, like Diana Schwarzbard of Setauket, believe any job that deals with children, including lifeguards and scout leaders, should mandate background checks.
