Police say the situation began in North Massapequa when police approached a red Lexus on the side of the Southern State Parkway in connection to the drug investigation. At that point, they say the driver took off, with an officer half inside the vehicle.

“The car took off with our officer half into the car,” says Nassau Detective Lt. Kevin Smith. “The officer was able to get out his weapon and he fired one round into the car, striking the subject in the left arm.”

Even though he was shot, police say the driver kept going on the Southern State until he got off on Route 110. He made his way through the back streets of Amityville until he lost control and crashed into a tree stump on County Line Road.

Police say a passenger in the car got out, fled and was picked up by another driver.

The driver of the car and the police officer are both recovering at Nassau University Medical Center.
