N. Valley Stream mom charged under social-host law

A North Valley Stream mother and her twin 17-year-olds were arraigned Saturday in connection with a violation of Nassau County's "social host" law after up to 200 youths attended a raucous party at the home where beer and liquor were supplied, Nassau police said.

Shanta Subdhan, 48, was charged under the county law by which parents can be arrested for allowing young people to drink at their homes, police said. Sharon Subdhan, her daughter, was charged with a misdemeanor related to provision of alcohol to minors, and her son, Ron Subdhan, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, also a misdemeanor.

One 17-year-old female was treated for alcohol poisoning at Franklin Hospital Medical Center after police were called to the scene shortly before 9:30 p.m. Friday and officers noticed that she was so intoxicated that she could not stand.

The end-of-school-year bash at 759 Wyngate Dr. W. was broken up by Fifth Precinct officers after at least three complaints to the 911 emergency line, said Det. Lt. Kevin Smith, a police spokesman. Police witnessed teenagers drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages.

"When it was discovered that the police were present, as you can imagine, all the youth that were inside the house and in the backyard scattered in all different directions," Smith said.

A sergeant who was investigating the party spotted a 17-year-old female who was vomiting and was "so intoxicated that she couldn't stand," Smith said. The authorities called her parents, and she was taken to Franklin Hospital for alcohol poisoning.

"At one point, she said that she was served, and drank, seven to eight shots of vodka within an hour's period of time," Smith said. "That girl was in a state where she easily could have been hurt or sick much worse than perhaps if the officers hadn't got there."

In addition to being charged with violating the social host law, Shanta Subdhan was accused of a misdemeanor related to the provision of alcohol to minors.

"She knew what was going on," Smith said. "She was a willing participant."

After arraignment Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead, Shanta Subdhan was released on $500 bail, Ron Subdhan was released on $250 bail and Sharon Subdhan was released on her own recognizance. Their next court date was set for Tuesday.

All three refused to comment upon returning to their home Saturday afternoon, yelling at a reporter to go away.

In 2005, Shanta Subdhan, who ran a day-care center out of her home, was arrested and accused of child endangerment after she left three children alone while going to pick up another child. She later pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct..
