Massapequa man arrested in connection with robbery spree

A Massapequa man arrested Friday in connection with one attempted robbery, and was later linked to five other robberies since May, Nassau police said.

Michael Acciarito, 39, was arrested Friday before 4 p.m. after arriving at the Nassau County Probation Office in Mineola for an appointment with his probation officer, police said.

He was first linked to a June 22 attempted robbery of a Bank of America branch on Merrick Road in Lynbrook, police said. Later, police said, Acciarito was found to have been involved in robberies of five other banks since May: a Bank of America on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, a Wachovia Bank on Long Beach Road in Oceanside, a Chase Bank on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, a Bank of America on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow, and, earlier Friday, a Roslyn Savings bank on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa.

Witnesses helped police put together a composite drawing of Acciarito after the June 22 robbery, police said. Acciarito's parole officer noticed him on a "Wanted" poster and alerted detectives, police said.

He was charged with five counts of third-degree robbery and one count of third-degree attempted robbery; he will be arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead.
