New Year's crackdown nets 46 DWI arrests on LI

In a New Year's Eve crackdown by Nassau and Suffolk police, nearly four dozen people were arrested on drunken driving charges.

In Suffolk, police charged 19 drivers with driving while intoxicated between 4 p.m. New Year's Eve and 8 a.m. New Year's Day.
In Nassau, 27 drivers were charged with DWI from midnight to 9 a.m. yesterday, Nassau police commissioner Lawrence Mulvey said in a statement.
No drivers were arrested in Nassau on New Year's Eve between 5 p.m. and midnight, said Nassau Police Officer Patricia Tanksley.
"I think because of the weather, no one was on the road," she said, referring to Wednesday's snowstorm.
This year's drunken driving arrests are hard to compare with last year's, because the time frames differ. Nassau and Suffolk police were unable to explain why different time periods were measured this year.
In Nassau last year, police arrested 27 drivers between noon on New Year's Eve and 9 a.m. on New Year's Day.
In Suffolk, police made more arrests last year, charging 27 people with driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol between 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve and 9 a.m. on New Year's Day.
This year, Suffolk police officers are no longer responsible for patrolling the Long Island Expressway. That job now falls to the Suffolk Sheriff's Department, which could not provide information yesterday on its New Year's Eve DWI arrests.
