NCPD taps special team to crack hit-and-runs

Hit-and-run accidents are some of the most difficult crimes to solve, but the Nassau County Police Department has a unique weapon in finding the answers.
NCPD taps special team to crack hit-and-runs

The VCARS team, or Vehicular Crime and Reconstruction Section, is a unit within the NCPD trained to solve vehicular crimes, including hit-and-runs.

One such accident happened in May of 2007 in East Meadow, when a woman was run over by a van, which then sped away. Detective Gary Ferrucci and his VCARS team collected evidence at the scene and eventually located the van and the driver.

"Our responsibility is to bring closure to these cases we respond on," says Detective Dave Nystrom, of the Nassau County Police Department.
