Funeral for Nassau officer killed in crash

Michael J. Califano, a highway patrol officer who was struck by a flatbed truck and died on the Long Island Expressway in Old Westbury, will be buried Thursday.

Califano's funeral Mass is noon at Maria Regina Roman Catholic Church in Seaford, with burial to follow at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury.

Because of the funeral, Jerusalem Avenue between Wantagh Avenue and Broadway is closed until 3 p.m.

Police said John Kaley, 25, a New Britain, Conn., trucker, fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into Califano's car as Califano conducted a traffic stop. Califano, 44, of Wantagh, died early Saturday.

Kaley faces charges including criminally negligent homicide.
