Man accused of trying to discard gun during traffic stop

A Roosevelt man was charged Friday with criminal possession of a weapon after he threw a loaded .25-caliber Beretta handgun to the ground during a routine traffic stop, Nassau police said Saturday.

Michael A. Purcell, 26, of 7 Grenada Ave., was stopped on Henry Street at the intersection of Nassau Road in Roosevelt about 5:17 p.m.

As officers approached the vehicle, he attempted to flee and threw away the gun. Purcell was arrested after a brief struggle with officers.

He was charged with second-degree and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and with resisting arrest, police said, and was due for arraignment Saturday at First District Court, Hempstead.
