Three teens arrested for allegedly defacing Sept. 11 memorial

Nassau police arrested three teens Sunday morning after they allegedly defaced a memorial to a Port Authority captain who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Police said early Sunday morning the defendants entered the Captain Kathy Mazza Memorial Park on Elm Street in South Farmingdale and damaged the granite memorial. Police have not yet released the extent of the damage.

The defendants, who were charged with second degree criminal mischief and entering a closed park, are Shane Magnani, 17, of North Iowa Avenue in North Massapequa, Jonathan Koppie, 16, of High Street in Farmingdale, and Walter Palm, of Rose Street in Massapequa Park.

The defendants were arrested on Elm Street at 1:45 a.m.. They are scheduled to be arraign in District Court in Hempstead Sunday.
