3 arrested in counterfeit check scam

A Bay Shore woman and two Bronx men were arrested yesterday afternoon on grand larceny charges after the woman attempted to cash a counterfeit check at a Massapequa bank, police said.
Diane Knapper, 18, entered the Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union at 5455 Merrick Rd., Massapequa, at 3:35 p.m. and presented a counterfeit check to the bank manager, who subsequently contacted police.
Waiting in a vehicle were Michael Lightly, Jr., 23 of 1895 University Ave., in the Bronx, and Gregory Taylor, 30, of 1314 Merriam Ave., in the Bronx. Both were found to be in possession of additional counterfeit checks, police said.
"Our investigation revealed that the defendants, over the course of several days, passed counterfeit checks at various Teachers Federal Credit Union offices and cashed them against Knapper's account in Westbury," the police report said.
The total value of the passed counterfeit checks was $8,915.
Knapper faces a third-degree charge of grand larceny, possession of a forged instrument, identity theft and fraud. Lightly is being charged with five counts of possession of a forged instrument. Taylor is being charged with second-degree possession of a forged instrument, unlicensed operator, unlicensed operation of a vehicle and failure to stay in a single lane.
The defendants will be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
