A discarded cigarette left at the scene of a February break-in in Mineola led cops to a burglary suspect who stole rifles and shotguns, police said.
Nassau County police on Monday arrested Anthony Miola, 35, of 337 Marcellus Rd., Mineola, after tying him to the crime through DNA on the cigarette butt recovered at the scene.
The burglary occurred on Monday, Feb. 23, at a warehouse belonging to Cutting Edge Inc., on Roosevelt Avenue. Police said Miola "pried open" a locked gun cabinet, stole hunting rifles and shotguns, then stole office equipment and tools.
When crime-scene investigators processed the warehouse, they discovered a cigarette on the floor. They extracted DNA from that cigarette and matched it to a DNA sample from Miola, police said. It was unclear Tuesday how police had obtained that DNA from Miola.
He was charged with third-degree burglary and is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
