Man arrested in gas station clerk slaying

A Hicksville man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a gas station attendant last week in Hicksville, police said Friday.

Jose Luis Turcios Banegas, 24, of Myers Avenue, was arrested overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Banegas stabbed Dharam Paul, 50, of Valley Stream, multiple times inside a store area of a BP Gas station at 199 Broadway in Hicksville on Feb. 17, Nassau police said.

A customer entering the station store found Paul on the floor -- and called 911 at 5:28 a.m. Paul was pronounced dead at 5:55 that morning.

Police did not say what led them to Banegas or if other potential charges are pending at this time.

Banegas said nothing as he was led from police headquarters, on the way to his arraignment.
