Cops: Man arrested after reporting bogus robbery

Efron Bethea told police he was "robbed at gunpoint" on Old Country Road in Mineola not long after noon on Wednesday, police said.
But detectives investigated and determined there was no robbery, police said, earning Bethea, 22, of 131st Street in Ozone Park, a charge of filing a false written statement and an appearance ticket returnable to First District Court in Hempstead on June 9, police said.
Nassau County Police said Bethea reported the robbery Wednesday, saying he had been robbed at gunpoint on Third Avenue and Old Country Road at around 12:30 p.m.
When detectives investigated, Bethea "reportedly admitted fabricating the incident," police said.
The charge is a misdemeanor.
