Beau charged after hostage standoff

A hostage situation in Roosevelt ended Saturday morning with the arrest of Ricky Miller, 22, on charges of assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. Nassau police said Miller had gotten into a fight with a 24-year-old woman shortly after midnight Friday, throwing her to the ground in front of the couple's 10-month-old daughter. After the assault, police said, five of the woman's friends and relatives responded to her call for help. They went to the couple's Cumberland Avenue residence where, police said, Miller threatened to shoot them, displaying what appeared to be a handgun. The five drove away and called police, who sent hostage negotiators and other emergency officials.

After 3 1/2 hours, police said, Miller surrendered. He was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree assault, five counts of second-degree menacing and one count of endangering the welfare of a child. His girlfriend suffered facial swelling but declined treatment, police said.
