Nassau County officials say cameras installed on traffic lights to capture images of drivers running red lights have also caught several accidents on video.

Christopher Mistron, of Nassau Traffic Safety, says there is video evidence of drivers speeding through intersections up to 12 seconds after the light has turned red.

However, officials say the 26 red light cameras across the county may be changing the way people drive. The camera at the intersection of Milburn and Merrick roads in Baldwin recorded about 12 violations a day when it was first installed, but now it records just one, officials say.Nassau has collected more than $6 million in fines from the program.
