Police dog tracks down fleeing suspect

As police officers chased a suspect across the streets and backyards of Uniondale Monday night, the man kicked off his sneakers and left them behind -- with a .32-caliber revolver and four bags of marijuana inside the shoes, police said.
Kirk Lyons, 21, was tracked down with the help of a Nassau police dog, Boomer, and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, escape, and marijuana possession.
Two officers stopped the suspect's car at about 11:20 p.m. after he ran a stop sign at California and Midwood avenues, and they saw him try to hide a clear plastic bag of marijuana between his legs, police said.
The officers asked him to get out of the car and arrested him, but he broke loose as he was led to their patrol car, police said.
Lyons ran east on Midwood Avenue, then south on California Avenue.
"As the defendant fled he kicked his sneakers off leaving them for officers to recover. A loaded 32-cal. revolver and four zip lock bags of marijuana were found inside the sneakers," a police report said.
He was caught in the backyard of a Clarendon Road home.
Lyons, of 22 Stanton Blvd. Uniondale, faces arraignment Tuesday at First District Court, Hempstead.
