ISLAND PARK: Suspect arrested in bank robberies

Nassau County police arrested an Island Park man yesterday and charged him with robbing one bank that morning, and another two days earlier.
Detectives said Charles Riehl, 37, of 61 Parma Rd. [CORRECTION: A man arrested Monday for allegedly robbing two banks does not live at 61 Parma Rd. in Island Park, according to a longtime resident there. Nassau police said Charles Riehl, 37, gave them that address. PG. A19 ALL 2/27/08], entered a North Fork Bank at 2530 Stewart Ave. in Westbury at 10:10 a.m. and handed the teller a note demanding money. She handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and Riehl fled, only to be caught on Lion Lane by Third Precinct officers about 20 minutes later. All the money was recovered; none of the nine bank employees and three customers inside the bank were injured, police said. Police said Riehl had robbed another bank, the Astoria Federal Savings Bank in Oceanside, in a similar fashion on Saturday.
