Newly released burglar arrested again in Nassau

Daniel E. Bliss was released from a Florida prison this week after serving time for a burglary conviction, Nassau police were there waiting for him "with open arms," a police officer said yesterday.

Through DNA matching, Nassau police were able to link Bliss, 45, of 1751 Bellmore Ave., to a 2003 burglary of a Hewlett environmental firm, said Det. Lt. Lawrence Feffer.

"Once we identified him, we found out he was in jail in Florida," Feffer said yesterday, following Bliss' Monday release.

Bliss was arraigned on third-degree burglary charges in First District Court in Hempstead and held on bail of $100,000 bond or $50,000 cash.

Bliss was also arraigned on unrelated warrant charges of criminal possession of stolen property stemming from a Bethpage incident, and false personation and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in a Hempstead case, police said. The dates and details of those cases were not available yesterday. His next court date is tomorrow.

Bliss was working as a plumber's assistant at the New York Environmental Resources office on Prospect Avenue when he threw a cinderblock through the company's plate-glass window early Nov. 3, 2003, police said.

Bliss cut himself as he climbed through the window, leaving blood that was later tested for DNA. He took $400 in cash from a desk drawer, police said.

Nassau police found Bliss in the national DNA database after a 2007 arrest in Florida. During his 366-day sentence in that state, he gave a DNA sample that police matched to the blood recovered in the Hewlett burglary, Feffer said.

Attempts to reach Bliss' family were unsuccessful yesterday
