Cops: Dad with baby in car faces DWI charge

A Hempstead man was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child after he drove drunk Sunday with his 6-month-old baby in the car, Nassau police said.

Luis Lopez, 35, was driving in Hicksville shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday when he was stopped by the police, who found his son in the backseat in a car seat, police said. Lopez had been driving west on West John Street, police said.

Officers later learned that his driver's license was revoked after a previous conviction for driving while intoxicated, police said.

No one was injured. The baby was placed in his mother's custody.

Lopez was charged with driving while intoxicated, two counts of aggravated unlicensed driving, endangering the welfare of a child and driving with an obstructed view.

He faces arraignment Monday at First District Court, Hempstead.
