'Click it or Ticket' campaign kicks off

The wrong answer could earn drivers a fine over the course of the next two weeks, as state police and officers in Nassau and Suffolk participate in the annual New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee "Click it or Ticket" awareness and enforcement campaign.

Police said they're hoping the campaign will help cut down on the real cost of non-compliance - injuries and fatalities from not being belted.

The campaign begins Monday and runs through Nov. 28.

During that time officers will be enforcing adult seat belt and child safety seat laws.

Violators 16 or older can be fined up to $50 for failure to buckle.

Under state vehicle and traffic law:

· All children under the age of 4 must be restrained in a federally approved child safety seat or, if a child weighs more than 40 pounds, in a child restraint system in conjunction with safety belts. The restraint system must meet the manufacturer's size and weight recommendations.

· Children ages 4 through 7 must be properly restrained in an appropriate child restraint system that meets the height and weight recommendations according to the manufacturer.

· All front seat passengers ages 8 and up must wear a seat belt.

· All rear seat passengers ages 8 through 15 must wear a seat belt.

· The driver of the vehicle is responsible for passengers under age 16 that are found to be in violation of the law.
