Cops: Arrested man robbed 14 Nassau banks

A Levittown man who robbed a bank Tuesday was quickly arrested by Nassau police as he tried to escape with stolen cash, and robbery squad detectives then connected him to 14 other bank heists in Nassau County this year, police said.

Ryan McCarthy, 28, of 29 Low Lane, was charged with 14 counts of robbery and one of attempted robbery.

He robbed the same Roslyn Savings Bank branch three times, and pulled off two robberies each at a pair of Commerce Bank branches, police said.

In Tuesday's robbery McCarthy entered a Capital One bank branch at 369 Merrick Ave., East Meadow, at around 2 p.m. and handed a teller a demand note, police said. The teller gave him cash and he ran away headed east on Warren Street, where he was soon pursued by a Nassau police robbery squad detective who arrested him with the help of First Precinct police officers, police said. They recovered all the money.

McCarthy is charged with robbing the following branches:

Commerce Bank, 2260 Merrick Rd., Merrick, on June 6.

Commerce Bank, 225 Broadway, Hicksville on June 14.

Commerce Bank, 500 Old Country Rd., Plainview, on June 25 and July 29.

Roslyn Savings Bank, 411 Jericho Turnpike, Mineola, on July 2, July 24 and July 26.

Commerce Bank, 4126 Merrick Rd., Massapequa, on July 8 and July 31.

Commerce Bank, 145 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, on July 11.

Commerce Bank, 690 Hempstead Tpke., Franklin Square on Aug. 4.

Commerce Bank, 111 Mineola Ave., Roslyn Heights, on Aug. 6.

Capital One Bank, 369 Merrick Ave., East Meadow, on Aug. 7.

The attempted robbery took place at a Washington Mutual branch at 247-20 Jericho Tpke., Bellerose, on July 26.
