Nassau Cops, AMTs Rescue Newborn Baby

WESTBURY, NY

Nassau County police officer Todd Atkin said when he arrived at a Westbury home responding to a 911 call, he saw a 40-year-old mother with her newborn son in her arms.

“The baby was lifeless and kind of blue in color. We noticed the umbilical cord was still attached,” Atkin said Wednesday.

The officers began life saving measures, and soon the ambulance arrived.

“I was talking to him the whole time, trying to wake him up, to get him moving, get him going,” said officer Jessie Cooper.

In the ambulance, on the way to the hospital, the newborn began to cry.

“It kind of hits you hard after that – when it’s done and over with – what just happened. It’s an indescribable feeling,” said Atkin.

The child is now in stable condition at the hospital.
