Retreat!

The interesting thing about Larry Levy’s Op-Ed piece of May 3, 2006 *It isn't time yet for Tom Suozzi to pack it in*, was not what he wrote, but what he was trying to accomplish. The political power of the Newsday Editorial Board (a.k.a. The Shadow Government) is largely derived from their use of the power of the press to be political kingmaker's. The current Nassau County Executive is just another example of the “Shadow Government” at work. He is merely a creature of their making.

Unfortunately, you can only maintain your power as kingmaker, if you can really make a king.

Unfortunately, you can only maintain your power as kingmaker, if you can really make a king. Not a legislator, or a County Executive, but a Governor. The “Shadow Government” rolled the dice with the current County Executive. They flexed all their political and press muscles. Nothing happened. There is only one thing a politician fears more than losing, that is being ignored.

The “Shadow Government”, other than the coverage they provide themselves, is being totally ignored. Now reality is setting in. It is more important to the “Shadow Government” that their role as kingmaker, not matter how illusionary it is, be maintained at all costs.

Newsday is trying to spin his way out of harms way. Good try. The funny part is that nobody took the “Shadow Government’s” attempt to shape the Governors race seriously, other than themselves. So now Newsday is trying to convince themselves, and the political world at large, that the “Shadow Government” is still alive and well. It may be alive, it is certainly not well, and most importantly it is being ignored. It is clear that the “Shadow Government” is not ready for prime time.
