Police officers say Nassau's 1st Precinct possibly contaminated with asbestos

(05/19/05) BALDWIN - Some police officers are demanding that Nassau County’s 1st Precinct be shut down temporarily due to asbestos.
The Nassau County Police Benevolent Association (PBA) says it is concerned about the possible asbestos contamination inside the 70-year-old Baldwin building. Earlier this month workers tore up floor tiles that were determined to contain asbestos. The PBA says they want the precinct shut down temporarily so the asbestos can be removed. Nassau County officials say a closure is unnecessary because air quality tests throughout the building showed no airborne asbestos.
The Nassau County Department of Public Works says anyone going into or out of the 1st Precinct will be affected by asbestos. However, Nassau County officials say the asbestos will be removed from the room where it was found.
