Nassau's Mangano skipping North Shore police confab

The spokesman had no immediate comment on why Mangano was skipping the session at North Hempstead Town Hall in Manhasset, but said Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey will attend.

Mangano's press office later released a statement reading:

“The proposal for consolidating services is part of negotiations with the unions as we attempt to close a $286 million deficit inherited by the administration and therefore not appropriate to speak in public about the proposal. County Executive Mangano has begun to speak to other officials about this proposal, and will be hosting public meetings in the future. He has spoken with Supervisor Kaiman and they have agreed to continue a dialogue about the potential impact of this proposal.”

The session was called by TONH Supervisor Jon Kaiman after Mangano said late last week that the county might be able to save up to $20 million in administrative costs by consolidating the Second Precinct, based in Woodbury, and the Sixth Precinct, based in Manhasset. Mangano said at the time that his plan was preliminary and could be changed.
